Interlibrary Loan (ILL) allows FCPL cardholders to borrow materials from other libraries when FCPL does not own the item. Up to three active ILL requests and three ILL items checked out at one time are permitted. Copies of journal, magazine, or newspaper articles may also be requested within copyright restrictions.
If three ILL requests within a three-month period are not checked out or canceled in advance, ILL privileges will be suspended for three months. The suspension begins on the date of the third unclaimed request.
Materials already owned by FCPL, newly published books from the current or previous calendar year, and certain formats such as music CDs, DVDs/Blu-rays, audiobooks, eBooks, eAudiobooks, internet resources, kits, or passes are not available through ILL.
FCPL covers all costs for ILL unless the lending library requires additional charges. If extra fees apply, staff will contact the patron before proceeding. Once the fee is approved, it will be added to the account even if the item is not checked out.
Accounts must be in good standing to place an ILL request. Borrowing census microfilm from states outside Georgia requires the patron to pay the cost.
The lending library sets the loan period and determines whether renewals are allowed. Loan periods vary and may be shorter than FCPL’s regular checkout times. Renewals are not guaranteed. Renewal requests should be made at least three days before the due date so the lending library can be contacted. Some items cannot be renewed.
In some cases, the lending library may require that materials be used only in the library. These items must be read, viewed, or used at the library and returned to staff at the Ask Us desk.
All ILL materials must be returned to the Ask Us desk at your branch. Please do not place them in indoor or outdoor book drops, as this can risk damage or misrouting to the lending library.
Overdue ILL materials are subject to FCPL late fees. If an ILL item is more than 21 days overdue, FCPL will contact the lending library for the replacement cost and any associated fees. These charges will then be applied to the account.
Many ILL materials are difficult to replace. Charges for lost or damaged items follow the lending library’s policies and may include significant additional fees. FCPL does not issue refunds after payment, accept replacement copies, or waive fees from other libraries.
Accounts with unpaid fees may be referred to a collection agency, and an additional processing fee will be added to the account.
